The History Trust of South Australia’s response and commitment to keeping COVIDSafe

Updated: 1 June 2020

The History Trust of South Australia is delighted to reopen our doors and welcome our visitors back to our museums as part of the South Australian Government’s Roadmap to Recovery Step 2.

Our museums will begin to reopen from Wednesday 3 June 2020, with the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, opening from 10am. The South Australian Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide, and the Migration Museum in Adelaide city will follow, opening their doors at 10am Friday 5 June. The Centre of Democracy, located in the State Library of South Australia’s Institute Building, will reopen when that building reopens to the public.

We reopen with a considered and cautious approach and, as always, the health and safety our visitors, museum teams, behind-the-scenes teams and volunteers remain our priority.

Our principles and approach remain as:

  • The health and wellbeing of our visitors and people are our priority
  • We provide accessible and reliable information from our people, through both our museums and our digital platforms
  • We have undertaken specific hazard identification and risk assessments at all museums, and have developed updated guidelines and procedures, including capacity limits, hygiene protocols and social distancing measures
  • We adhere to state and federal government guidelines and recommendations at all times.

Over past weeks, each of our museum teams have undergone a significant process of risk assessment, workplace safety training, plus exhibition and display adaptation to ensure that we adhere to state and federal government requirements when we reopen.

We have committed to ensuring that we open taking into account the unique contexts and environment of our sites, the health and well-being of our people and visitors, and the safe experiencing of our diverse collections, displays and exhibitions. There are some changes to museum procedures and visitor information and details can be found on our museums’ websites.

We continue to provide access to our museums, collections and programs through our digital platforms and so we encourage our friends and supporters to join us online as we create new ways to connect. Our education team has online museums tours so that classes can see, hear, and engage with museum exhibitions and experts from their classrooms.

The History Trust’s Community Program team will continue to work with South Australia’s history network of individuals, associations and volunteer groups offering resources and guidance so that the state’s important community heritage and cultural organisations can also reopen safely as local circumstances are deemed appropriate.

We will provide updates on any changes through our website and social media channels. If you are seeking information on COVID-19, visit www.health.gov.au or call the Australian Government’s Department of Health Coronavirus Information Line on 1800 020 080.
