SESSION 4
‘The Role of Surveyors in Early South Australia’ presented by Andrew Peake OAM
Tickets
Surveyors were a crucial element in the settlement of South Australia. For the establishment of the colony the surveyors had to survey the land around Adelaide to enablement settlement to commence. The economy was also dependent upon the sale of land, to fund the emigration of new settlers to the colony. In the first hundred years, some 460 surveyors were involved in surveying the colony from town allotments to country sections to pastoral leases. This presentation will provide an over view of the role of surveyors and the contribution they made to the establishment and settlement of South Australia, with a focus on the role of some of these surveyors, who were in many cases the first white people to venture into remote regions, many of whom had a shortened life from the privations they endured.
